How to Deal with Conflict in the Workplace

Let’s face it: we all encounter conflict in the workplace. It’s inevitable for issues to arise when we’re each wired differently, handling and perceiving daily tasks and interactions in unique ways.

So how do we deal with conflict? Check out these 3 steps to dealing with it in the workplace:

  • Step 1: Admit the conflict. The first step to dealing with conflict is to address that conflict exists. While avoiding rifts can seem like the easy choice in the short-term, it can lead to even more damage in the long-term. So whether it's a small or large scale conflict, be ready and willing to admit it exists.

  • Step 2: Address the conflict. Next, it’s important to address the conflict by going directly to that individual. Transparently share what you’re experiencing – whether that’s disrespect, gossip, tardiness, or the like. Remember to be as neutral and objective as possible so that hurt feelings can be avoided.

  • Step 3: Alleviate the conflict. Finally, work as much as you can to alleviate the conflict and resolve things with your coworker. Open the door to their thoughts and opinions by asking, “How can we better work together? Is there anything I should be aware of when it comes to our working relationship?”
